I used this to slightly raise the pH of my marine aquarium and it works.
It’s very important to follow the instructions because this is calcium hydroxide. In a saturated solution it has a pH of 14, which is approximately the same as Drano. Very caustic.
Make sure you mix it in a container that you can shake. Don’t put more than is specified per gallon in the poorly written instructions.
After it dissolves you’ll have powder settling to the bottom. let it settle to where it’s no longer cloudy and then pour the mixture into another container making sure the bottom part doesn’t go over. Then let the second container settle out.
Now it’s ready for the makeup tank. It takes my makeup tank about 5 days to completely empty into the sump. Therefore it’s very slowly introduced into the water.
Following instructions, never ever put the powder into the tank… unless you want to kill your fish.
Just to repeat, the original solution you make has the high pH, approaching 14. Don’t get it on your skin face fingers eyes mouth etc. And make sure it’s slowly added to the tank volume, over a period of more than a few days. Clean up your mixing jugs, I used a gallon milk jug, by flooding them with water and rinsing completely a few times. Don’t touch the powder or let any of it fluff up into a powdery cloud that you might breathe or get into your eyes. Be very cautious about this fine powder. The most crucial step is measuring it out with proper spoon and carefully putting it into the milk jug. Any spills should be taken up by very wet paper towel.
There’s the topic of measuring pH that is important. I won’t go into it here. There are electric measuring systems that are difficult to use but are far more accurate. The paper strips are kind of subtle and aren’t very good for measuring less than a half a pH change. So be cautious and don’t overdo it.
A benefit of this product is not only it raises the pH but simultaneously provides calcium in a form that the corals can use.
Trying not to be preachy here but, all in all, this is a product that requires care and carefulness.
